Book Review - Paul Akers - Free Lance Star
When Mao Zedong’s revolution in Communist China began to go flat, the chairman launched the Red Guards to purge pastel apparatchiks. Now the Reagan Revolution has lost its zing, but the spirit of free-market democracy at least demonstrates its efficiency. No labor-intensive rampaging street hordes seek to revive Reaganist fervor; the operation is being conducted by only two men, Edwin Feulner and Doug Wilson, in their inspiring "Getting America Right: The True Conservative Values Our Nation Needs Today."
This isn’t a happy hour for conservative Republicans; indeed, many feel like downing a strychnine martini with a sprig of hemlock. A GOP-run Congress, the authors note, has replaced the Democratic mantra of "tax and spend" with "borrow and spend" — ruining the nation’s fiscal health. In 2004, after four years of Republican legislative and executive rule, the national debt hit its legal limit of $7.4 trillion, forcing Congress to raise the ceiling by $800 billion.
Meanwhile, the pork barrel is rolling as though Kyle Petty is at the wheel.
In 1982," write Feulner and Wilson, "Congress passed a highway bill containing 10 earmarks for pork-barrel goodies. By 2005, the number had grown to more than 6,300." All this devil-may-care spending is a pox on posterity. Already, the federal debt burden nears $100,000 on every American household, and it’s growing.
And then there’s the president, the supposed standard-bearer for conservatism, who signed into law a Medicare drug benefit that saddles all of us with an $8.7 billion unfunded liability.
Aphasia is generally not seen as a leadership boon. Thus, while Bush created a bottomless old-style entitlement in his first term, in his second The Great Non-Communicator got nowhere in selling a sensible Social Security reform that would have made the markets serve American workers.
The administration’s lack of foresight in Iraq, where the outcome of a three-year war is uncertain, and its 10-thumbs response to Hurricane Katrina brand Bush as a bumbler and doom any agenda he can’t carry out by executive order. Meanwhile, Republicans in Congress nervously await a November storm that will test their high-tech gerrymandering and gleeful slopping of the homefolks.
Feulner and Wilson are having none of this pessimism, at least in the long term. Feulner is president of The Heritage Foundation, briefly my former employer, and Wilson chairs the Heritage-linked Townhall.com. Heritage was a major contributor of ideas to Reagan, who was ever-sunny about America’s prospects. The authors are no less so, provided that citizens rouse themselves to demand a government worthy of its founders.
The writers lay out six questions by which they wish every American would judge government policy — questions touching on self-reliance, prosperity, national security and more. For a policy book, this is an easy read, sprinkled with good humor — an anecdote about a fast-food customer who sought to mobilize the cops to secure her right to a particular burger is a gem — and it’s clear in its message that conservative principles, properly understood and ethically applied, provide an exit from our current despair.
